Kay Bojesen’s famous wooden figurines are often described as toys, but the Guardsman, monkey and other animals are clearly iconic designs that appeal to the child in all of us. This world-renowned designer also created designs for children, and now Kay Bojesen Denmark is launching The Alphabet blocks for the first time. The blocks saw the light of day in the late 1950s, and today the intelligent design still captures the charm of little ones learning while they play.

The monkey is without doubt Kay Bojesen’s most popular wooden figurine. Today, more than 300,000 monkeys are playing the day away in offices, bookcases and children’s rooms all over the world, as this diminutive jungle swinger has become an international design icon – and a symbol of the best of Danish design. This great affection for the small wooden figurine has prompted Kay Bojesen Denmark to expand its monkey troop and launch a medium-sized 28 cm monkey.

Until 21 September 2014, Sophienholm in Lyngby will host Denmark’s largest-ever exhibition of this popular designer’s most iconic masterpieces. His charming and original universe of functional design will also be reflected in a new book about Bojesen; a colourful, cultural character who enjoyed a long life and was the father of the famous wooden monkey, the Guardsman, Grand Prix cutlery and much, much more.
The Kay Bojesen exhibit at Sophienholm comprises a wide array of objects from Kay Bojesen’s multifarious design universe, including pieces from the largest private collections in Denmark.
The Kay Bojesen exhibition at Sophienholm runs from 28 June to 21 September.
The turtle dove is known in both ornithology and mythology for mating for life, and with the launch of Kay Bojesen Denmark’s new Turtle Doves this spring, all design lovers will have a new friend for life.
The Turtle Dove, which is a smaller version of its colourful cousin, The Songbird, is made from two-tone natural wood and sold in pairs as the ideal gift for any heartfelt celebration, from weddings to housewarmings.
With the springtime launch, all design lovers now have the opportunity to give The Turtle Doves as a gift on a heartfelt occasion. The courting doves are the perfect present for summer weddings, but also to celebrate a housewarming, graduation, birthday or christening, where the beautiful design can become a lifetime companion for the recipient – as is the true nature of the turtle dove.
Kay Bojesen’s woodwork is full of personality – from the swinging Monkey to the cheeky Hippo. In 2012, Kay Bojesen Denmark set the colourful Songbirds aflight, featuring names from the designer’s own family. Now another bird has landed in the family tree – the elegant, silver-topped leader of the flock, Ernst.
In spring 2014, Kay Bojesen Denmark is ready with a strong and noble new release, as the Songbird Family is joined by a seventh member. The distinguished gentleman “Ernst”, with his discrete grey plumage and striking black bill, is a perfect match for today’s graphic interior design trends.
Ernst is named after Kay Bojesen’s father, who for years published a satirical magazine called The Octopus, and the well-known Danish publisher passed on his sense of humour, imagination and playfulness to his famed son.
